The chosen people means they were chosen by God for a special purpose and would receive special blessings for following His will.
Initially it started with Abraham and the traceable lineage comes down through history.
It is the people God chose to take His message to the world. They -historically and Biblically - pretty mcuh kept it to themselves, and actually seemed to think they were a step above everyone else. (Sound familiar today - I mean with Christians)

Originally it is commonly (but wrongly)believed that if you were not a direct heir to one of the 12 tribes you could not be a Jew.

However after Jesus' death on the cross and the Jews stoning of Philip... the gospel was taken to the gentiles... The people without the bloodline.

Now today the believers in Christ can lay claim to all the blessings and promises made to Abraham. See the following verses.

Gal 3: 14. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,16. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ ..17. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
18. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise......... 28. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29. AND IF YE BE CHRIST'S, THEN YE ARE ABRAHAM'S SEED, AND HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE.

I would encourage you to read it in context for yourself.

So I guess the final answer to your question is

Why are the Christians today not God's chosen people?

IF WE HAVE ACCEPTED CHRIST................WE ARE THE CHOSEN PEOPLE.

Isn't that good news? It is not too late for any one to join the "chosen people"

PS I believe the Jews of today will still play an enormous part in the fulfillment of prophecy. I do not beleive we have replaced the Jews... I believe we have become a part of them.

Before anyone hollers............ Jesus is a Jew. We are His brothers and sisters.

Well, no, the concept predates Jesus by a millenia or so. And don't hang the responsibility for killing Jesus on us.

The idea comes from the promises that G-d makes to Abraham.
"Now therefore, if you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then you shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people. For all the earth is mine: and you shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation" (Exodus 19:5,6).

Check out wikipedia article below if you'd like to know more about some of the different Jewish interpretations of what it means to be 'chosen.' The heart of it though, is that the Jewish people have been chosen to receive certain obligations, such as following Torah. There is a strong mutality in this relationship.

Some people see Christianty as superceding Judaism. (And others see Islam as replacing Christianity.) They believe that Christians have replaced Jews as the 'chosen people' and that Jews can regain it only if they convert to Christianity. This of course is not a position that most Jews are comfortable with.

As you know, they became the "chosen people", the "12 Tribes of Israel", because of a promise God made to Abraham, to be carried thru his son, Isaac. Ishmael, the other son, was taken away by his mother, and did not inherit as he was not worthy. During the 40-year trek thru the desert looking for the promised land, after Moses freed the Jews from slavery in Egypt, the tribes were originally named and the promise was given. That's when the Israelites were given the land of Israel by God, forever. God's promises are forever, and that is their land, forever. Any who go against Israel will be punished, as you can see from history, but that doesn't mean Israel hasn't suffered, they have, as a consequence of disobeying God. The bible tells us though that they will be forgiven and shall be His chosen people again.

No matter what christians will tell you about them now being the chosen people, it tells us in Revelation of the 144,000, 12,000 each from each of the 12 tribes, so it's not a "christians are the new chosen kind of thing". Sure, we christians will have our place in heaven, but we are not the chosen people, whether we like it or not. Also, Jesus and His diciples were Jews, so hating or blaming Jews for the acts of a couple of pharasees is not an option. Face it, if Jesus wasn't sacrificed for our sins, we'd be in deep doo-doo. As awful as it was, without the crucifiction, we'd be lost, so they actually did us a huge favor.

The Jews are called the Chosen People because God chose Mary and Joseph, who were Jews to be the parents of Jesus. And so the Jews are his earthly human relatives, aunts, uncles, cousins.

He did also say, at one point, that anyone who believes in Him and follows Him becomes his family.

The early followers of Jesus were Jewish. It was a Jewish sect and then it went out among the Gentiles, the rest of the world. So not all Jews are the same. some Jews, like Matthew, Mark, John, and Paul, James accepted him as the Messiah, and some did not. The Jews that were responsible for killing him were a small group.

The Christian gentiles, not of Jewish ancestry, are 'adopted' into the family of Jesus in baptism and are now also among the Chosen People with the Jews.

THE JEWS DID NOT KILL JESUS, The Romans saw an opportunity to have Jesus killed because he was becoming a threath to their governnment. Remember that the Jews way of killing as a punishment is stoning to death and crucifixion is a Roman way of killing and humiliating a criminal. The Jews hated Jesus and wanted him killed because they thought he blasphemed God by claiming he is the son of God, he conducted healing on a Sabbath day which to the Jew is a very important day of rest to them (see Book of Numbers 15: 32-36) and he boasted about having their temple destroyed and said he will build it back on the third day (Jewish temple is always built in the name of God).
Being a chosen people was a title given to them because they are descendants of Adam and Eve whom were chosen by God to be the first two people on earth according to the interpretations made on the Bible..(which I personally am not convinced.)

The father of modern religion, most importantly of the Jewish religion, was Abraham. From him stemmed Isaac (the Jewish branch) and Ishmael (the Islamic branch.)
In the Old Testament, God is said to have spoken directly with Abraham. He also spoke through dreams to Joseph who saved his family by what God told him.
They followed God's laws and He made them His chosen people. Moses freed them and David ruled them.
Jesus came and split religion further, from Judaism, paganism, and Christianity. The Jews are God's chosen people in the beginning and remain so now. To believe that God retracted His protection over them is to think that He isn't perfect. They are still His chosen.

God chose the Israelites as His chosen people long before Jesus came. In fact, the covenant was made with Abraham through Isaac.

The Apostles were scattered after Christ's resurrection to preach to all. Paul identifies his own calling to preach to the Gentiles. Paul also warn Gentiles about the Jews current disbelief, stating that their branch was cut off -- only temporarily -- so that the Gentiles can be grafted in. One day, the Bible states, every knee will bow befor Christ.

Along with being God's chosen people, there comes responsibility. I believe that the 144,000 Jews will remain during the tribulation to preach the Gospel...yet all will be killed. John tells us that those waiting in heaven - under the altar! - will be given white robes and told to wait awhile longer. This is a special place before God. The Jews, I believe, will also be the ones who return with Christ and reign on earth during the 1000 years of peace.

Hope this helps.

You are wrong!
The chosen people goes all the way back to Abraham!

It is something God likes about the Jews.

If you get into the study you will find that the Jews did not call for the death of Christ! but it is a very deep study.

The ROMAN SOLDIERS killed Jesus.

The Jews were the chosen people long before Jesus was born. One SMALL, LITTLE group of them called for Jesus to be crucified.

How would you like to still be being blamed for something that you had nothing to do with, that happened 2000 years ago?

One or two or even one hundred people of a certain religion don't speak for everyone in that religion. If a group of people who happen to be Methodists go on a killing spree does that mean ALL Methodists are murderers and should be blamed?

Nobody is blaming you for things your ancestors did.

The Jewish people were a holy nation and a holy people meaning they were a seperate people chosen by God. The purpose for them being chosen was simply to bring them to God and away from pagan religion for a later time when Christ would come from those people. They were simply chosen by God because of one mans faith, Abraham.
