Shortly after 9-11 I did a lot of blogging about France, particularly because of the backlash because the Iraq war meant we were engaging a country where French companies had billions of dollars of contracts to rebuild the infra-structure using Food-For-Oil money. As we found out post-invasion the money was paid but no repairs had been done.

The French Foreign Legion is alive and well and engaged in several African countries where they foment civil war and keep the area unbalanced so France, Belgium, and Russia can continue to profit from the unrest.

France and Belgium raid the natural resources (such as col-tan from the Congo). Additionally Belgium is the world's arm dealer, selling Russian arms to anyone with cash. France sells Russian arms to the corrupt African regime that they are supporting, Belgium sells the Russian arms to the other side.

So to answer your question, while the French will tell you that the Foreign Legion is mandated by their charter to operate only outside of their country, the truth is that it is occupied stirring up civil unrest, including rape and muder when necessary, to keep the African nations unstable.

On the contrary, the Legion is stationed in France proper as well. Grenoble and Corsica.

The point in not using an "elite fighting force" against civilians within one's own national borders is the same rationale that sustains any functional democracy - namely, freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech. Asking the Legion to strike out against French youth, no matter how misguided, is like asking the 101st Airborne to shoot student demonstrators at a place like UC Berkeley, or using the Marine Corps to against civilian looters during the Katrina disaster. It is stupidity of the worst sort, only worthy of the worst dictatorships, and completely unworthy of the Legion's capabilities.

France has a more than capable national police force. They also happen to be staunch allies in the realm of intelligence, police work, and anti-terrorism efforts. This Franco-American cooperation may not be visible to those who are out of the loop to begin with and don't possess the faculties to recognize it, but is there nonetheless - no matter how many times the ill-informed may bag on France.

France is a responsible enough nation NOT to use its military on its own civilians. Give credit where credit is due.

The mandate of the Legion does not allow it to serve on French soil. It isn't even allowed to be stationed on French soil. The present of le Kepi Blanc at the riots would be like adding gas to a fire.

Armies don't usually get called to duty at home. Anyway, the French CRS (national police) are just as vicious, and they perhaps speak better French.

You're not allowed to fight blacks. Only to appease them.
