Treat yourself as you would treat a best friend. Take care of you and know that you have as much right to be on this earth as anyone else. Be kind to the child inside of you, give that child good advice and forgiveness. Know that everyone has questions about themselves and are unique. Don't worry about what others think about you, they all have their own issues to deal with, no one is perfect. Getting started is the hardest part, but You can create the life you want, be brave and just do it.

It sounds contradictory, but being a successful, whole grownup means being able to mommy yourself, so that you have something to give others. So it's good you're taking that first step. What would a good mom do for her kids? She'd feed them healthy things, get them the best medical care she could, see that they went to bed on time and didn't lie around in bed all morning, she'd find them interesting things to read to stimulate their minds, she'd limit their computer time (my inner mommy is shaking her finger at me 'bout now ;). A good mom teaches her kids that after they've taken care of themselves, it feels good to go out and treat other people well too!
If someone made her kid feel bad, a good mom would explain that we can defend ourselves, but we can't control other people's behavior. Having conflict with other people does NOT mean you are a bad person, not necessarily. A good mom passes on to her kids the knowledge that although people may be at times cruel and unfeeling, that the world was not originally put together that way, that there is a Source of Love to whom we can turn for comfort.
Love. That's what a good mom teaches her kids. If your mom didn't do that for you, I see you have a problem, but there is still HOPE. All mothers mess up to some degree, but some way more than others. Maybe there is something about loving yourself that your mom should have taught you, but didn't. Is there a way you two could reconnect to heal old wounds, or for her to share wisdom that's she's gained since you grew up? Or, if you are convinced that your mom would be unable to do this for you, is there a thoughtful adult that you could approach (a counselor? a pastor?) who could--not be your mom--but fill you in on the aspects of caring for yourself that your mom/dad couldn't/didn't teach you?

Love yourself. find something you love about you and focus on it. Like if you have pretty eyes then buy some nice eye make up, or if you can dance really good then join a dance class. just have fun
