It is a sacrament given us by God. The Holy Spirit washes sins away and creates faith through baptism.

Baptism is the immersion of a person in water. This symbolizes the change in the believer’s life and it also testifies to Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. This is an act done to a person that understands that Jesus is the only way of salvation.

The reason we baptize is because Jesus commanded it.
Mark 16:16 (NKJV)
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

We baptize for a few reasons...
It strengthens and unites the church (the congregation witnessing the baptist)

It unites that believer to a congregation and then will be held accountable to that congregation to walk uprightly and faithfully to the Lord.

It is the first step of obedience to the Lord.

The result of baptism ...uniting a congregation. strengthening a congregation.

Unfortunately Baptism doesn't guarentee salvation. One must be a true Christian in order to be saved. Baptism can and has been done to non-Christians. These people are not saved, and unfortunately have a false sense of security with God.

Baptism is a public sign that you have now put your faith in Christ and are taking an open stand for Him. It is also a sign that Jesus has now washed away all your sins. You have been cleansed of every sin you've ever committed, because of what Jesus Christ did on the cross for you! Baptism is a conclusive act of obedience and witness to the world that we are Christ's. Baptism is not, however, the prime requirement for salvation...Paul's central theme was Christ and His saving power.

As the Scripture is reviewed, the place of baptism will surely be discovered. If baptism were a requirement for salvation, we would certainly be told that. But you couldn't support that knowing, for example, that the thief on the cross had no opportunity for baptism or church membership. Yet on his confession, paradise was secured. Jesus said to him, 'Today shalt thou be with me in paradise' (Luke 23:43)."

John the Baptist taught water baptism. Prepare the way for the Lord. This is the baptism of repentance. Jesus has a baptism of the Holy Spirit & fire. The Holy Spirit develops God's love in a person & person filled with the Holy Spirit loves God in it. Pray in the Spirit building your most Holy Faith. The fire is a refiners fire that burns away all lies & purifies. I believe this is the fire that we are refined by on earth. There is also washing in the Word of God to renew our minds (stinking thinking).

Also water baptism (after salvation or at salvation) represents the old man dies (when going under), the new man in Christ is alive (when comming up).

The first step is recognizing one is a sinner & confessing Jesus Christ ones Saviour & Lord (He shed His blood for the remission of ones sins.) He is the sacrifice for us.

Believing in the resurrection with heart faith. Because we will be raised up likewise by the Holy Spirit. On earth, we are continually refilled to overflowing in His righteousness.

If you know the bible, you know that this is biblical.

The reason was to receive the holy spirit- as when Apollos was asked if he had received the baptizm of the holy spirit.

The purpose was the outward showing of the inward belief or change in the persons heart- as shown when apollos was actually baptized, his heart was with God , or he would not have received the holy spirit.

The result was that Apollos ( in this case) was able to understand and was given wisdom from God to go out and spread the news of Jesus and his resurection, and what it meant for all of us.

The entire story is in the book of acts, one of the easier books of the bible to read and understand.

Hi,

The reason for baptism is obedience. We see that when Jesus comes on the scene in the gospels- he went to John to be baptized. It is not to receive the Holy Spirit-- but it is a step of obedience to publicly declare that you want to live for Christ. As you go down in the water it symbolizes that you are burying your old life of sin and following the flesh and as you rise as Christ rose- you are living by the power of His Spirit.

Baptism is not a requirement for Salvation as some would teach. It is a step of obedience and if Jesus did it- we ought to as well.

Scriptures to Read would be: The gospels (particularly Matthew and the book of Acts).

Hope that helps,

Nickster

For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. *****Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience*****, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him. 1 Peter 3:18-22

To point out. It is an external and visible ceremony. The baptism of the spirit and with fire comes later as a private thing between you and the Lord.

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in NEWNESS OF LIFE.

Hope this helps
