It's genetics. One of my cats started out with this little orange spot on top of her head (she was black and gray striped tabby). As she grew, I'd say about ten months along, the orange really started to become prominent. And this is no ordinary orange like Morris... or Garfield. This is fiery orange!!!
Changes in fur color are not uncommon so don't worry. Please give your kitty a pat from me and my cats, Figaro and Rosina.
Have a great day!!!

sounds like a cat this is been loose roaming and has "rusting" of the fur from the sunlight. are you able to submit a %? Emily, you have pronounced this in the past and as quickly as, you're incorrect. Black is black in cats. in line with threat you're complicated cats with horses? stable Brown and extraordinarily Brown and White are VERY uncommon colorings in cats.

Change in hair color can also be a vitamin deficiency. Are you feeding him a high quality food? Black cats sometimes appear reddish in the sun.

could be his fur is getting sun bleached if he is spending a lot of time in a sunny window...if you are very concerned call the vet and they might be able to tell you...one of my cats black fur was changing to an orange color and he loves to sit in the window where it is sunny or on the floor where the sun is shining in or on the bed in the sun.

the heat of summer could be cuasing it.sometimes fur changes in seasons.or the fur could be maturing.my gebil went from light blonde to dark brown in one year!!!my cats seem to change a bit from summer to winter, but it could also be a skin condition causing it.just to be on the safe side,go to a vet to make sure nothing is wrong.

Some breeds don't get their markings until they mature, like ragdolls are born white then turn dark blond, and siamese kittens get their points as they age.

I am not sure but sometimes if they are laying in the sun too long the fur will lighten up.

Age and maturing. Just like how human babies hair usually changes from blonde to dark or vice versa.
