I feel exactly the same. I also dislike it when you see parents taking young children into the pub with them. Not a good place for children!

I agree that a woman should not drink and/or smoke during pregnancy. However, for those of you who have never been a smoker do not know how hard it is to quit. Congratulations, and I hope you never do. But for some of you to say that a woman who smokes should be sterile? That is such a mean thing to say. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 1 1/2 yrs. I thought we couldn't get pregnant? I have been a smoker for 10yrs. As soon as my doctor put me on fertility treatment, I have been trying to quit. I have gone from 10 cigs/ day to 3! If you have never gone through the experience of trying to quit smoking, please don't voice your opinion about such a sensitive issue. Yes, if you have enough will power, you can quit. And probably someone who is 9mos preg and still smoking never wanted to quit- and probably don't think anything could happen. Anyway, just wanted to share what I am going through --I am not sure if I am pregnant yet or not, I go this Monday...

I've read some interesting responses. The ones who say smoking and drinking while pregnant should be illegal. I'm REALLY curious to know if these people are pro-choice when it comes to abortion. The same excuse can be used for this argument..."I'm a woman, it's my body, don't tell me what to do with it. I can smoke and drink if I want to." People use this argument all the time with abortion...It's my body, blah blah blah. So you're pro-choice...suck/rip the baby out and it's fine. But God forbid I have one occasional cigarette or beer while I'm pregnant and there should be a law against it?

Women in the U.k are made aware of the potential risks to their babies if they drink, smoke etc. Smoking can cause miscarriages, restrict the growth of the baby and cause many more serious problems. Smoking damages the ability of the placenta, or afterbirth, to provide oxygen and nutrients to the baby. Children of smokers are more likely to suffer from asthma and are more at risk from cot death. Alcohol can cause a life destroying condition called fetal alcohol syndrome which, amongst other things causes learning and behavioural difficulties; and, whilst the latest guidelines are no more than two units a week, no one knows exactly how much or how little it really takes to cause this condition. So in answer to your question, yes, I hate to see women smoking and drinking in pregnancy, it is irresponsible and selfish, and ignorance of the facts is simply not a good enough excuse. The majority of women in this country are well informed of the risks they are taking, and, even if they are not told by their midwife or G.P. there is more than enough information in the media.

Oh My God it pisses me off! Worse yet, women who smoke pot while pregnant!
I used to have a few drinks a week, and smoke cigs prior to pregnancy, the second I found out I was pregnant though, I stopped. I figure, if I'm going to kill myself slowly, that's my decision, I'm a grown woman, but there's no way in hell I'm going to put my child in danger. I may not be perfect but at even I know that it just isn't right. They didn't ask for that and they don't deserve it either! I do everything I can to make sure my baby is as healthy as possible.
I also hate all those women who don't keep their kids restrained in car seats! I can't believe how many women I see letting their kids run lose in the bakc seat, or I'll see the woman holding their baby on their lap.

i was never a big drinker but gave up completely once i found out i was pregnant, and i never smoked so i can't really judge someone who has those addictions. i know it's harmful for a baby but i'd prefer that that child was born rather than aborted, my mum smoked through her pregnancy and i was lucky enough to be perfectly healthy. for those who plan children i think they should consider giving up before trying to become pregnant. i also believe that if you have a healthy lifestyle you'll have a great pregnancy and a healthy baby, everything about my pregnancy was "normal" no complications whatsoever! and i now have a very strong baby boy :)

Yes, I do feel the same way. I feel that way too when I see a mother or father that smokes in the car with their child in it. I have seen mothers who put a blanket over the baby's basket. And then smoke a cigarette, thinking that they won't get smoke on their kids. Please note: smoke lingers on a person's clothes and it can still give babies problems if the baby is in close proximity. Let us just hope that the future mothers will be more educated. Good luck.

I hate it - I find it very difficult to walk by and not say anything, but in this day and age you are likely to get a smack in the face, even from a pregnant woman (especially if she smokes and drinks).
Women like that don't care about anything else other than themselves.
I gave up alcohol as soon as I found out I was pregnant, and have only had the odd glass of wine since I stopped breast feeding my son at 10 months. (don't smoke so that wasn't an issue.)
Priorities change for most women but others .... well .........

Yes, I feel the same way... It's a very bad action to drink and smoke during pregnancy and/or doing that with a pregnant women present in the same room. It's disrespectful for the baby and the women herself. Why do they bring babies to this world if they can't be responsible?

I agree. My friend smoked all through her pregnancy. Now her son has some delays in his development. She says she sometimes thinks it might be her fault for smoking while she was pregnant. But then she goes on to say that if she has a second child she'll smoke anyway. Plus her poor little boy is always breathing in her second hand smoke and he walks around smelling like an ash tray because both the Mom and Dad smoke with him around.
