whenever i run, i usually run in the late afternoon or at night. but then i got a job, so i started to run in the mornings. the problem is that i feel weaker and less energetic when i run in the morning than i do at night. at night i usually run 3 to 4 miles with no problem, but in the morning im panting excessively on the mile and a half mark and i get very sore after. i do eat at combination of carbs and protein about an hour before i run. what is wrong? how can i feel the same energy i feel at night in the morning?

Your symptoms are actually quite common and I can relate.

Here are some things you can do:

1) Be sure you get plenty of rest. Sleeping 6 hours and then expecting to put in a quality run is going only going to lead sub-par performances.

2) Be sure you warm up a little. When you roll out of bed, your core temperate is low. Warming up will allow the body to gradually get ready for the intense run ahead.

3) Glycogen depletion. When you sleep at night, your body uses its glycogen stores (i.e. blood sugar) for food. When you wake up in the morning, you are generally low on sugar. Therefore, you are literally "running on fumes". Theoretically, when you run, you'll be running on your fat stores, hence burning fat, but your performance will decline.

When I run in the morning, if I want a quality run I usually drink about 8 oz of gatorade 15 minutes before heading out the door. If I am going longer maybe a piece of fruit. You'll be the best judge to determine what you can tolerate. But I suspect your performance is largely related to #3.

I've been running for several years and to be honest, I've never really had a quality, kick-butt run first thing in the morning (when I race, I wake up 2 - 3 hours beforehand to eat).

Hopefully that helps.

My advice would be to drink a cup of coffee or half a caffiene pill before you run.

Youre body is just not awake yet and this is the only way I can think of to kickstart it

Make sure you get a lot of sleep, and don't eat until after your run.
