As long as they aren't made of compressed Simtex or don't have titles like How To Hijack Airliners for Fun and Profit or How to Make Bombs From Items You Can Find On An Jet Plane, yeah, as far as I know you hand. You hand it to them they x-ray it, let the dog sniff it and after the security guard has gotten a good whiff, they should let your carry it on the plane!

yes....books are allowed. but you might want to go to the website of the airline youre using and make sure that you dont bring any other things that may not be allowed.

yes you are allowed to take a small bag but with no liquids in there

I'm not so sure, because I've heard that some airlines are NOT allowind ANY hand baggage. Call the airline to be really sure.

More importantly and you certainly seem to suspect this already--YOU DEFINITELY DO NEED HELP if you are going to New York.

Can you avoid going? That is the best option.
