Ultrasounds are not 100% accurate....nor do they claim to be. However, with generation 4 ultrasound, the claims are approaching 99.9% accuracy.
At 16 weeks, sex organs are fully formed, so the difference should be clear.

It could be wrong now matter how far along you are. My sister in law was told her 3rd kid was a girl, and it was a boy. For her 4th kid she had a few sonograms because she was having complications, every single time they told her the baby was a girl. Once again, the baby was a boy. With my daughter we had a very clear shot of her privates, there was no mistaking she was a girl, the tech. even gave us the picture and put an arrow and the words "it's a girl." The baby's parts should be developed no matter what the baby is at this point in your pregnancy, but it's still best to not trust what they say the sex is, not unless you have that clear shot. Have another sonogram when you are about 7 months along (but even then you might not be able to tell 100%). Good Luck.

Boys can often be seen at 15-16 weeks, some sono techs may be willing to call a girl if they don't see signs of a boy at that time-but I rarely call it a girl until nearly 25 weeks when the female labia are more swollen and easier to see. Boys can still hide their "parts" even at this 16 week stage, also legs held tightly together or decreased amniotic fluid can make it diificult to determine. I personally would NOT take much stock in planning for a girl now-unless you like changing everything you have bought in pink back to blue!

Yes at 16 - 17 weeks it could be possible that it's a boy. It's hard for some technicians to tell because girls' genitals are swollen and it makes them protrude and sometimes can be mistaken for a penis. If your ultrasound tech is very experienced, I'm sure they can tell you with some certainty what it is. However, if you're in doubt, you can have another ultrasound done after 20 weeks to be more certain.

It's not so much that the boy's parts take longer to come in, but they may miss them on the ultrasound. It's usually right when it says it's a boy, but for a girl, its wrong at least 30% of the time.

Yup its possible the doctor told my friend his woman was having a baby girl and when "she" came out, "she" had a penis. They had planned on a girl too all the clothes and everything. That ultrasound was done @ 17 weeks.. the gentials only have developed at 16 weeks.. I waited to have mine till I was 24 weeks so I could be absolutely sure! If you can't do another ultrasound later just continue to be neutrual about clothing and such just in case until the birth....

boys and girls develop their anatomy about the same time and it's before the 16 weeks so if they told you it's a girl then it's a girl i had an ultrasound when i was about 16 weeks also and mines a boy

The OB/GYN told me that if she wrote it on my chart that she was 100% sure and sure enough she was right..but theres always that posibility that its a boy and he's just hiding his stuff! As long as your baby is healthy it shouldnt matter what the sex it...be greatfull some people who want to get pregnant cant

Of course it's possible for it to be wrong. Even the doctors admit that it's not 100% accurate.

There's a documentary on television right now about 10 couples suing their doctors for a 'mis-diagnosed' gender.

Yes it could be wrong. I had a friend who was told she was having a girl. She went out and got all pink stuff and decorated the baby's room in pink. She ended up having a boy...oops
