Religion is largely about winning 'merit' in this world in order to, basically, go to holiday camp in the next.

Logically therefore, consciously doing a good deed in order to outweigh a previous sin is, in itself, an egregiously selfish act.

(This why when anyone mentions religion, I watch the Simpsons instead.)





PS: Overall, what you did is arguably better than coveting his cat and feeding his wife, so I think you're OK. Just don't take it any further with the cat, dude : )

If you subscribe to Christian beliefs, the answer is "no"; the point is to feel sorry about your selfish acts, and never commit them again. There's no exchange rate of redemption; the good acts you perform are supposed to be the fruit (an expected natural product) of your state of being saved (that is, recognizing Jesus as your Lord and Savior and letting Him guide your behavior in life) and not a sort of quid-pro-quo for the bad things you do commit.
