doing butterflies with dumbells can help your chest strength, and doing curls can help your biceps and triceps...these exercises can help, but wrap your wrists before exercise...however, you should really have your wrists checked out for injury...you might have carpal tunnel or arthritis in the wrists...

Lynda,

I will assume you are in the Army. There is no exercise that will help you with that short amount of time - your best recourse is to practice by doing the pushups. It would help if I knew your age, so I knew how many pushups you had to do.

My suggestion - if it is hurting your wrists, one of two things is happening. 1) You are not doing the push ups correctly. If this is the case, have your NCO or 1SG show you the proper way. 2) You have a wrist injury that should be treated. Report to sick call and talk to the doctor. Explain that when you do push ups your wrists hurt. They may give you a profile which can temporarily permit you to "drop" the push up portion of your PT test. If you do this however, you must do it now - delaying could make it look like you are trying to find excuses; prompt action is advised.

Good luck.

the only way to improve PushUps is to do PushUps. If you have a wrist injury, get a doctor to look at it, get a profile, get better, working on an injured joint will only increase the injury and cause more long term damage. Be smart, heal yourself first, then do the PT test.

Try doing them against a wall. My wrists are fused together and don't bend period, let alone being able to do a normal push up, but I was taught how to do them this way.

stand a few feet from the wall so that you have to lean in very far forward to place your plams on the wall. all of your weight won't be on the wrists this way.

work your back and shoulders, those are major muscles worked when doing push ups, as well general core strength. Try and rely more on your shoulders to do the work instead of your wrists. Good luck

suck it up and do them. the best way to get better at push-ups is to do them!

my dad was special forces green beret and i had to do push-ups when i was little so i would be able to hold up a shot gun! true story.
so, if a little kid can build up strength to do a ton of push-ups, you can too.

do 20-30 a day and they will get easier everyday.

self-motivation is the key. if you can't motivate yourself, then you don't really want to pass your PT.

Push ups suck. But you need to work past the pain. Try redistributing your weight more to your fingers.

Yeah, it's called SCREWING OFF OUTSIDE IN FRONT OF THE DRILL SGT!

Trainee! Get down and give me 25!

Do that enough and you'll pass!

What, you don't wake up and do 25 each morning! YOu don't do 25 before bed!

I do that at home for FUN!

Or get a boyfriend and INSIST on being ON TOP and INSIST on doing all the work!

Now THAT'LL GET YOU IN SHAPE, even though he comes in 4 minutes! That's a lot of deep up and down up and down!

believe it or not, DIPS really help with the push ups. Yoga will really help strengthen those wrists, too.

you just have to do them, if you do them everyday, your wrists will get used to it and hurt less.
