not that i know of--i have a Jack Russell Terrier--and the vet said they get run over a lot, because they escape from the back yard, by digging under the fence, or jumping over the fence, and start running around the streets until they are run over by a car!! come to think of it my wife had a Basset Hound when her sons were young, and i think she said he was a digger--trying to dig out under the fence--that could be the answer !! the way to solve this problem is to go to Lowe's and buy concrete blocks- that are 12"-18" long-3-4" tall, and 6-8 " wide ?? not sure of the dimensions- they are sorta like stepping blocks--one size weighs 12 lbs per block--my JR terrier moved those--so we bought the bigger blocks -they weigh 25.5 lbs each--set them end to end in front of your fence, no spaces !! all along your back yard fence, and the dog will not be able to move them, like the 12 lb blocks my JR Terrier moved!, and will not be able to dig out beneath them, to escape under the fence, get out, and then be run over !! any more ??-holler back at me !! good luck to you with your new puppy !!!! PS- lay the blocks flat on the ground, end to end, not standing--they are only 3-4 " tall-yet 5-6" wide in front of the fence, and the 25.5 lbs per block weight, end to end, tightly together, no spaces-will prevent the dog from pushing the blocks around, and therefore, dog will be unable to dig beneath them, to escape the yard !!!

Basset Hounds are prone to wandering. They follow their nose and become oblivious to anything around them. Yes, they will wander into the street, or anywhere else. I've also heard many stories of bassets sleeping in the middle of the road (my first one did that once, scared the cr*p out of me).
Bassets require a secure, fenced yard.

OHHHH congratulations on your new bassett puppy. They are so adorable. Having had bassetts for many years I can tell you from experience that they are scent hounds. They pick up a scent and they follow it wherever it may lead and that can be into traffic. But they are not going to just run into the street in order to get run over but they may cause a traffic jam cause people tend to slow down to look at them :) With a scent hound they should not be left to roam free. Keep them in a fenced yard and on a leash when out of yard. Also take them to basic obedience training right away. They and you will enjoy the experience and will help you and the puppy to develop that special relationship that lasts a life time.

When I was young my parents had Basset Hounds for most of the time I was growing up. BHs like to get out and roam around. We always had to keep them in the house or yard, as when they got out they would wander. One of ours did get hit by a car and killed. But we've had other breeds get hit too. In my opinion, I would say the BHs have a tendency to track scents and wander off, not paying much attention to their surroundings...therefore they are more apt to walk onto a road or highway...
Good Luck

I am not sure. I will google it and check. I couldn't find anything. Sorry. But you could try training the dog not to go out on the street. When we had our dog it liked going on the streets exploring new things. But we got a shock collar for it. But we didn't want to shock it. Our dog hated the noise!! And now she doesn't go on the street. But if you don't want to shock the dog. You can get the dual shock collar. And just make the noise sound. My other dog also hates the sound of an aersol can.
Hope this helps.

I Think the problem is they follow their nose. Which alot of time will lead them across a street. Like other hounds they love to track things.

I'm sorry but by far this is one of the dumbest questions I've ever read. ANY dog will wander into the stree if it's not on a leash or in a fence. Please keep your dog with you or in a fence at all times.
