the only way to lighten dark hair is to bleach it first, then color it the color you want. If you add color to dark color, it will only darken it. You must strip the color out, then add color. Its a horrible process...I would start with highlights, the more and more you highlight it, over time, it will be light all over.

By lightening your hair in any way you are bleaching it. The best way to lighten dark hair to light brown is by easy mesh (foils), ask the hairdresser for chocolate and caramel tones. If you cant afford to go to a hairdresser you should check out your local college of further education where excellent trainee hairdressers will be all too willing to give you a great new look for very little money. P.S. dont bother with home kits....i learnt from experience that your hair will come out yellow and brittle

Don't use 'Sun In' - it works similar to lemon juice, which bleaches your hair and turns it orange. 'Sun In' works best on blonde hair. If you really want something that works, use the following mixture from a teen magazine:
1 teaspoon almond, cherry, or vanilla extract
4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
2 cups water
Mix them together and put them in a small spray bottle. Spray generously all over your hair and lay out in the sun for 30 minutes. This works very well, is inexpensive, and made especially for darker hair. It gives hair a pretty, sun-kissed look rather than a bleached look. Warning: apple cider vinegar smells bad, but it's totally worth it to have beautiful, sun-kissed hair! Good luck!

Use a hair lightener first then apply the light brown colour after you have washed off the lightener. The only way to lighten dark hair.

Use a hairdye made for african american people. The dye is stronger and will lighten your hair. I use it all the time and it works really good.

don't try sun in. just sit outside for a bit with lemon in your hair, works for me! squeeze a few lemons into your hair and let it dry in the sun, if you don't have lemons, try beach blonde's lighteners. i have a few of them, one of them is for all-over lightening then another for highlighting. just sitting outside by itself will lighten your hair.
hope all works out well!
