I am going to get my hair locked on Saturday. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get healthy dreadlocks from the start?

dreadlocks are NOT healthy at all.they are made bcuz u get them dirty and tangly.they will put a lot of oil on ur face causing a lot of zits and blackheads to pop up.plus,if u decide to stop having dreadlocks when u have them, ull have to shave ur head which, girl, probably wont look good.

There are such things as healthy locks. I have dreadlocks that hit mid-back ( Three years old). I started mine by having my hair braided into micro braids. I would spray everyday with a mixture of water and jojoba oil and shampoo once a weak till my hair began to lock(6-9 months) I tighten the new growth by finger twisting about every six weeks. Once they matured I began to shampoo them every other day. I had to change my answer after seeing a f*&%$ed up "professional stylist's" answer. never put shea butter or beeswax in your hair. It will lead to buildup. Do not twist too often It will destroy your rootbed and make your locks thin and break off.

First, don't believe what people say about dirty, smelly, bug infested hair. Some people think not combing and washing your hair is the same as getting dreads - not even close. When styled properly and maintained, dreads are a beautiful hairstyle. Keeping them clean (yes, you can shampoo) and being good about twisting them (especially in the back where I know it's hard), until they lock fully is the best way to get off to a healthy start. Congrats on getting loc'd! You'll look great.

I recently got mine loc's done but i made the mistake of no going to a salon and having my hair checked and given a deep treatment, it took 3 days and a thin needle to get them out!, you need to make sure that your hair is 100% heathly and that even with the loc's in that you treat your hair at least once every 4-6 wks. That way they dont go dry and brittle, and your natural oils and sheen will come through.

The thing of it is caucasions think that dreds are nasty matted hair, and in their case it is, for one, it's not meant for them. The texture of their hair is all wrong and does not lock without them matting and tangling their hair. African Americans have naturall curly hair which locks a lot faster and naturally which is why we call them loc's instead of dreads. They call them dreds because it is a dreadful situation they put themselves in trying to be something else instead os sticking to the bleach and dye. And they have to wash their hair everyday of course or it odors up and greases up. We don't have to. So if you just shampoo your loc's and keep them maintained by using shea butter to keep them moisturized so that they don't dry out you will have a beautiful head of loc's. Once they lock you also want to take a small amount of the shea butter about once a week and roll each loc individually in the palm of your hand. This keeps each lock tight and smooth and adds sheen. A great maintenence exercise. And when it's time to get your new growth twisted, don't miss your appointment.......... Enjoy being lock'd...............
