does google earth require an internet connection and if it does THEN WOULD IT WORK on a 56K modem net connection.

it requires a connection to load the program, and yes it will work with a 56k connection, just very slowly. I have it on my laptop and use it frequently to look around the world. for best results, you need to see about getting DSL, or a Broadband ISP . I have DSL, and what a diference it makes.

You only need an internet connection to download it and for upgrades.

No, you need broadband to run it. It doesn't download all the satelittle data immediately so the internet is needed to stream. See this page: http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21423&ctx=sibling.
