If your puppy is very young and you have had him for only a short time, it will take time for him to stop missing his mom and his litter mates. Eventually you will become his "pack" and he'll settle in. Crating can work very well for training a new puppy. It provides a safe place for him to feel comfortable and secure. It will take a few weeks, but set up a night time routine that works for you and your puppy. Maybe a little "rough-housing" followed by a walk and a quiet snuggle before he is put to bed in his place. He will cry, maybe all night for a while. It'll drive you crazy, but be firm, make sure he is comfortable with a warm and soft place to lay down along with a chew toy. A ticking alarm clock sometimes works, but they are becoming harder to find these days. Be patient and loving. Young puppies need to go out every 2-4 hours since their bladders are not able to hold much until they mature a bit. If he cries, take him outside.

The reason why the puppy is crying is probably because it is not with you and just wants to be. Otherwise I have no Ideas.

How old is the puppy? a warm blanket, toys, a small ticking clock, food or a chewing snack can help. I have a 3 month old pup and the chewing toy and warm blanet helped. Try leaving the TV on too, that way they don't feel alone. Hope this helps!

If it is at night, place a ticking clock and a warm hotwater bottle in his bed under his blanket. He will associate the ticking to his mother's heartbeat and the warmth of the hot water bottle to being inside his mother's uterus before he was born

I know this is gross, sweat on a shirt or wipe your underarms with it and give it to the puppy.
