I love basil but when I eat too much of it I seem to get very pale and feel yucky. Has anyone else had this reaction to basil? (I use it in pesto sauce.) Please don't respond if you're just going to be mean -- I only want to hear from people who have had a strange reaction to basil. I'm not looking for opinions about whether my question is a good one or not or what you think of me.

In all seriousness, you may be experiencing a mild allergic reaction to basil. I would recommend that you consult with your physician as soon as possible. Explain your symptoms to him, and he may offer a small battery of allergens (including basil) to tell whether you are being affected. Herbs, and other natural foods contain both the normal active constituents, and trace minerals from the soil in which they were grown. With that in mind, you might also try switching to another brand to see if it helps. It could be that the particular brand you use in your cooking has some trace impurity which does not react well to your body. Good luck, and I hope you feel better.

wow, that is really interesting. i've never heard of this. i guess you could be sensitive to basil. is basil the only common denominator though? is there something else you consistently eat with basil that it could be? do you feel this way eating anyting other than basil?

basil is from the mint family. do you show any sensitivity to mint of any kind?

i'm sorry, i've never heard of anyone having a strange reaction to basil. it is my favorite herb though, so i am vey sympathetic. i would hate to be sensitive to it!

good luck. i hope you figure it out!

Basil is used in herbal medicine, it is for treatment of digestive problems. Maybe that is why you have a reaction to it when you eat a lot..

I have felt very weird before. But it actually has affected my stomach and made be throw up whole basil leaves. I have better luck when it is finely chopped rather than whole.

Are you sure it's not the pine nuts in the pesto? You can be allergic to anything (I'm allergic to Peace Lillies) but I would think pine nuts would be a more likely allergy.
