tape is good
buy a roll of the blue masking tape at the hardware store, and just tape over the edge of the wall you dont want to paint. Make sure you press the edge down with a fingernail to get all the air bubbles out so paint doesnt get under the tape. after the new paint has dried, just peel up the masking tape. you may have to go back with a small brush to touch up any spots that you missed.

you can use tape (that blue masking tape) that they sell at the hardware store. this is a little time consuming to line a large room, or a lot of rooms. this method does work best for the rim of the ceiling.
you can also get a thing that looks like a giant puddy knife. it is in the concrete section. and use that as a guide. you need to wipe the blade occasionally, so that you don't get drips from the blade on the wall. also you can't be too heavy with the paint. it will run all over the place. if it doesn't come out dark enough the first time, then do another coat. this may take longer but the over all quality of the room will be worth it.
this spatula is a very good tool to have around for various other home projects. comes in handy in a new home!

tape works ok, but you should buy the blue painter tape it will not peel any paint off. They do make edgers and corner brushes as well. The edger is a small rectangle tool with a pad (where the paint goes) and small wheels that roll down the edge. This is used for ceilings and corners. If both walls are the same color the corner brush can be used. You can find these at most major home improvement stores or a local painting store. Good luck

I used to tape but have found a little tool to use that is so much easier. It's called an Edger and is sold at HomeDepot and Lowes. It's a flat, square (4 X 4) sponge like thingy that you can dip in paint and then slide around the corners or where the ceiling meets the walls. They only cost a few bucks. I use it all time now. The trick is to make sure you don't have too much paint on it. Try it, you'll never tape again!

Blue tape is good but paint does leak through sometimes. So what u can do after u tape the edges , caulk on the edges of the tape right before u brush it. Don't caulk completely before applying the paint because if the caulking dries and when u take off the tape it will tear the caulk. So go little by little and after u caulk then apply the paint and then remove the area that is painted right away.By any chance u did caulk more then u can handle then use razor blade to cut off the tape.

blue tape bleeds under the edge ..ever since 3m made it for the homeowner market ..it sucks...go to a real paint store in your area and not a home depot or lowes ..a real paint store.. ask for a roll of soft release tape...kleen edge is a good brand ..tape the edge of the wall and press the tape down with a 2 inch putty knife ..then paint ...the soft release tape will not bleed and will not pull off the paint when you remove it...i am a painting contractor I use it all the time on corners where two different colors meet

you can use some thick paper or somethin with a straight edge that wont bleed through as a guard so you dont get paint on the other surface ant you dont have to deal with all the tape theres a tool for just that.thats what i used but im shure you got something around the house you can improvise with.

You tape it or put up some brown paper over the area. Just be sure you get tape that won't take off the paint! it's not hard to do.
