you are not covered for the accident under your auto policy-- you should have made the payment. Making the payment after the cancellation of the policy will not backdate the coverage. GAP is there as a coverage to pay the remainder of the loan IF your auto policy does not cover the full amount of the loan. It will not pay for your car if it is totaled.
esentially, you are out of luck-- sorry.

Even if your insurance company reinstated you with no lapse in coverage, the company will see what was done and know you had no coverage on that day.

GAP insurance on your policy would pay off your car if you owed more than what it was worth when you totalled it. However, since your policy was inactive at the time of the accident, it's worthless at this point.

Nope! You were uninsured at the time of the accident. When you reinstate your insurance, it's typically at 12:01 AM the NEXT day that the reinstatement takes effect.

It depends on the state and the laws of that state. Also was it reinstated with a lapse in coverage or not. In Michigan, reinstatement means that there is no lapse in coverage. If there is a lapse, it is referred to as a rewrite. If you reported the accident to your agent, they will let you know right away if you are covered.

they won't cover it, and why should they. to me it seems like you weren't going to reinsate the insurance, but you did it becuase you got hit. it was a nice try to get your car fixed but it won't work.
