The phrase "Respect is earned, not given" does not give the person saying it cover for denying others fair treatment. It is selfish and wholly inappropriate to treat a person like dirt and than defend that by saying that the abusees have to earn their abusers respect. People are entitled, unless they have earned disrespect, to decent treatment, what might be on some level, respect. I hope I have cleared this up for some people.

Zach, that's pretty much what I said.

I might have misinterpreted your answer. Sorry if I did.

dreamprince_arun, please address my question in context. If someone is being rude, than it's understandable that you would not treat them with respect. Whether or not you should in another matter. But the point is that mistreating people without legitimate basis is never justifiable if one has an iota of manners. Some don't have a basis for being abusive beyond a whim.

I'm touched by your apathy, Jedi Knight.

Jedi Knight, come again? You're rationalising abusive behavior because its existence makes one stronger. No offense, Sir, but that's ludicrous. There is no excuse for unwarranted abuse, and defining a person who points that out as being wimpy does not change that.

Well said!

I hadn't encountered people on here using that as an excuse but you are absolutely right - the people who say that will have to learn that it applies to them first, if they wish it to apply to others.

You're right. In a civil society respect is given strangers because they've done nothing to lose that respect. On the other hand, once someone HAS lost that respect it must be earned back. People who don't understand that concept are either stupid or haven't been taught correctly. When you're disrespected by a stranger just consider that and pity them.

As far as abusive communication is concerned, I wont agree with this that u dont have to be abusive at any time of the life. Sorry. By saying u may find lots of gfs taking some kind of interest in u but quiet frankly, world is not good enough as u think.

Behave straight let it be arrogant abusive cocky or whatever ... if u think of being sweet honest nice fair then either wake up or ... i dont want to waste more time

I have to agree, to some extent it is earned, but that does not mean that all people who haven't earned trust get to start at 0. If all people followed that philosophy, they would lose trustby not treating others with respect, resulting in an untrusting civilization. In short, all people are entitled to trust and respect unless they do something to lose it, and even still, they are human, you can't treat them like trash.

I agree with you..Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion...I would hope that people would show some kind of respect..But we know that doesn't always happen..But it still does not give anyone the right to insult and call names to others..I am not going to lower myself to their standards..i am better than that.. I may be angry inside--but i try my best not to be disrespectful in my answers..i know i have said some things i shouldn't have before..But i won't do it again...

Life is not fair, get over it. If you're a pushover wimp, people will walk all over you. That's why you have to grow up a little and show people who they are dealing with, not sit here and whine about not being treated fairly.

People should never talk disrespectfully towards one another. There is absolutely no justification for it. Disrepectful language or actions are completely inapropriate. Disrepect has zero dignity.

Simple truth--You get what you give. If you give respect generously, it will be returned to you. This world needs more respect spread around.
