NO, don't put God in a box and say He must perform this way henceforth

No. I think the majority of the time when someone gets the gift of tongues, there is a need to use it. Sometimes there are teaching opportunities, and people only know a little bit of a language yet need to teach above their ability to speak, but the Holy Ghost can expand and magnify everyone's abilities so that they are able to teach in a way that the people are able to understand. The true gift of tongues should always be accompanied by the interpretation of tongues or the language being spoken, and it should be an enlightening experience and not a degrading or confusing one.

No.

Some people erroneously teach that the closer a person is walking pure in life will manifest its self in tongues. Meaning, the people that don't have the gift of tongues are not as holy as those that do have the gift.

The other error some teach is that if you don't have the gift of tongues then a person can't be a Christian. Tongues are not proof that one is saved. In fact, there have been a few I know that faked the tongues in church for a while...and now they say they don't believe in Christ at all.

Truly you are confused like most of the world, speaking in tongues was nothing but speaking in diffirent languages, see for yourself;
Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Ac 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Ac 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Ac 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
Ac 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Ac 2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Ac 2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Ac 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

No. Speaking in tongues is a gift . The benefit though of speaking in tongues is that the enemy (Satan) doesn't know what you're saying that's like when you're praying silently, which I do all the time but every now and then, I'll pray out aloud. He can't read your thoughts either :). Not everyone is blessed with the gift of tongues but God blesses and uses everyone to use other gifts that he has blessed us with. It does not make you any less of a christian. Rather it be ministering to someone in song (the choir) or just sharing a word of encouragement to someone through the scriptures. God uses everyone of us. But just remember, it's all for his Glory! Be blessed!

No. Speaking in Tongues is but one of the spiritual gifts the Holy Spirit has to bestow upon people. No one receives them all, as such, not EVERYONE will speak in tongues. Also, when you receive these gifts they are generally not fully developed.

Suppose you do receive the gift of 'tongues'.. you might not know you have it until you try to speak to someone of a foreign land, then suddenly you are able to speak in their language (which you'd never studied before...)

It has happened in that way, many times.. happened to someone on a mission trip from my church, she didn't know she had that gift until that trip.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

A phrase used to denote the endowments bestowed by the Holy Spirit in the primitive church (1 Cor 12:1), and the same as "gifts" (v. 4). A spiritual gift "means any extraordinary faculty, which operated for the furtherance of the welfare of the Christian community, and which was itself wrought by the grace of God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, in special individuals, in accordance, respectively, with the measure of their individual capacities, whether it were that the Spirit infused entirely new powers, or stimulated those already existing to higher power and activity (Rom 12:6 ff.)" (Meyer, Com., on 1 Cor 12:1). These gifts included word of wisdom; knowledge; faith; healing; effecting of miracles; prophecy; distinguishing of spirits; tongues; and their interpretation (vv. 8-10). See under various heads.

The Scripture says , "And cloven tongues fell upon each of them and they began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." So, yes, tongues are a sign that the Holy Ghost has fallen upon you.

The true gift of the Holy Spirit is love. First Corinthians 13 says"Even if I speak with the voice of angel, and have not love, I am a clashing gong." All other gifts are useless without love for the brethern. The true gift of baptism is joy.

No. Speaking in tongues is a gift from God, kind of like musical talent or a mathematical mind or something. Some people have the ability, some people don't.

No. The bible clearly states that "some" will speak in tongues. Others will prophsey and others interpret dreams etc... You won't know your gift necessarily until He decides for you to use it. Be careful too that if you do speak in tongues that someone is there to interpret.
