Some people can't feel good about themselves unless they belittle others. It's a self-esteem issue.

I guess its for the same reason that people ask really ridiculous questions. There are some people on here trying to just get/give a laugh while there are others that really do want an answer to their question. The people that give the stupid answers to serious questions are probably just trying to answer as many questions as they can without thinking about the actual question. But I guess it doesn't really matter..considering they make themselves look like fools anyway.

It probably spills over into their real life personalities.

I can't tell you how many times I have been in a group when a serious issue has come up and a few people just laugh and spew off smart a-- garbage. Some people's senses-of-humor just consume them to where they cannot take anything serious. I know this is easier to say than do, but it's best to just try your hardest to brush them off and concentrate on the people who are on the same level that you are on.

Y! answers serves a variety of purposes.
1. legitimite q/a
2. social networking
3. entertainment

clearly, the person answering the "serious" question with a "silly" responce is interested in choices 2 or 3. it's a normal part of life that people will pursue thier interests first. IF their interests line up with your interests (in this case, asking/resolving questions) then you both benefit. If, on the other hand, your interests don't line up - i.e. you are serious, they are not - then they accomplish their own goals and not yours. It not really a big deal.

Some questions are debatable as to the level of "serious". In fact, many questions on here are so far-fetched and ridiculous that they DESERVE a ridiculous answer. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. Plus, some people just need to be slapped with the truth.

How can it be a serious question AND make no sense? Perhaps you just aren't as good a translator as some others are?

When a person has no clue as to what the topic is about, they want to feel important and thus reply with anything that come off the top of their head.

I think that many so called serious questions are just tantalizing and pedantic ruminations intended to incite the unwary.
