I worked for Ford for four years and was thrilled with the Escape when it was introduced. I have since moved to a different line of work and my new boss has an Escape and loves it. He said it has lots of power when hauling around his family and their belongings and it can cruise right along on the highway. He went from a Honda to this truck and passed on the CRV in favor of the Escape. He gets decent mileage from this one and has had no trouble of any kind with it in more than three years of owning it. I had a number of customers at Ford (I was a service consultant) who had similar things to say and one that even bought a second one because they were impressed with the first one.

Escapes are very good
get a carfax, you could make the seller provide
if is the V6 automatic, just make sure the maintence was done
oil change
if it is high mileage, take it to a Ford dealership for a trans fluid change, and a diagnostic
be wary if it has a trailer hitch, Escapes can tow but not like a truck
1000 lb and not over 55
