Just wondered since they did buy some.

Or does it not apply to those who buy weapons to defend themselves?

It is a way to say the negative side of RESPECT. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

If you kill people, you will be similarly killed. Tit, for tat. An eye for an eye.

They bought swords, on Jesus' orders, prior to Him being arrested. If you remember, when He was arrested is when someone (most likely Peter) cut off the ear of the 'servant of the high priest' (Matt 26:51)

It was just after this that Jesus told them if they "live by the sword, they'll die by the sword" This was part of a lesson to the disciples that while Jesus would no longer be there to protect them, and they needed to "arm themselves" it was not swords that would protect them, but God and wisdom.

Jesus was always teaching, even in death, that's one of the most important things to remember when you are reading the Bible. Everything Jesus ever said or did was to illustrate a point, teach a lesson, etc.. So that we may learn from Him, and strive to lead, as He did, by example.

I only remember one reference to one using a sword, and that was when he cut off the ear of the head priest's servant I believe. Otherwise I don't know of any other mentioning of swords. Many of the disciples did die unpleasant deaths though, so it's possible.

Of course.

The question is why did his disciples, need swords? He told them not to kill with them. So, they would need the sword for food. There was no fast food restaurants back then.

i got 2 opinions on this one:

1) i think it means that if u pull out ur swords, u better be prepared to be harmed by a sword.
i think it's more like a "symbolic" thing coz if u do something, u have to take responsibilities on the result.

2) probably those 2 things u just said is unrelated since bible is full of contradictary statements.

The sword is the Bible itself, the sword of the Spirit - Ephesians 6:17

So we are to live and die by the sword, the Word of God, which is the Bible itself.

Living by the sword is not the same as owning a sword. What it means is those that make violence a way of life will ultimately cause their own demise.

Times have changed. Just as it is no longer acceptable to stone people in public places, some things in the bible need re-interpretation.

well brother it means that when people do evil they are repaid by evil. as for his disciples, well does it really matter about the dead people now? well self defens is a right thing to do, this has been mentioned in all Holy books but some people just misinterpret it.

How close by the sword must I be for this to be an issue?

Is it as dangerous as high voltage powerlines?
