Have you dyed your hair before? For a deep purple look, you can put Speciall Effects or Manic Panic right over the color brown (if it is "damaged" by color or sun or perm...it holds better)
Depending on the LENGTH of your hair, I would not BLEACH your hair just because getting your natural color would take too long and trying to bye it back would cause more damage. BLEACHING is very traumatizing to your hair. If you want to lighten your hair before you do this, find a boxed hair dye (Clairol, Loreal, etc.) that is 2 shades lighter than the color it says on the box. Then dye it with that. It will be less traumatizing to your hair and will hold the purple. If you want to dye your hair back after that use a box dye again.
You can find Special Effects or Manic Panic at Hot Topic or other dye at Sally's
Good luck....purple is such a beautiful color on the hair!

They sell home kits at Hot Topic, Sally's and (believe it or not) Walgreens. Read the box to see if it says anything about needing to purchase a separate bleaching kit to bleach the areas you want to dye purple, first or if the product is bold enough to show up over dark colors and also to see whether it's permanent (may fade, but has to be cut off or bleached out to remove,) semi-permanent (several shampoos to wash out) or temporary (single shampoo to wash out.)
Good luck, hope it turns out great!

Actually i think if u dye ur hair purple ur going a little extreme with the color. i mean purple isn't a bad color but its exotic. well its your head and i can't tell u what to do with it. so if u want to dye ur hair purple go ahead.

My roommate used to dye her hair purple with Kool-Aid. She got the instructions out of the first Bubbles book by Sarah Stromeyer.

well i have dyed my hair purple but because i have it really light it came out reddish-brownish so i figure the darker the hair the better it will come out.i bought loreal paris purple power and on the box it had this really cool dark purple hair woman i guess her hair was black. but if you have any douts you can always check on the side of the boxes it shows you how your hair might come out depending on your hair color.ok

I wish I did have tips. My cousin dyed her hair blue, then bleaced it, & then dyed it red. You have to bleach it & then turn it to purple. I may be wrong.
