Fresh horseradish root is in the produce section. You grate it for use in most recipes. This is the only way to get the full, HOT, horseradish flavor.

You can get prepared horseradish (already grated and in a little jar) in the refrigerator section of the store, near the dairy products. Another possible location is in the refrigerator section that has the kosher products (near the refrigerated pickles). It comes in white and red. The red horseradish has beet juice added. Prepared horseradish loses its flavor pretty quickly, even if it hasn't been opened.

It is in the refrigerated section usually close to the butter. Now the big question would be , WHY? The answer will have to come from someone with a lot more knowledge than I have. I do know you have to keep it refrigerated. But, why in that section? Be sure and check the expiration date on the jar. This has a very short shelf life.
