I have two chihuahuas and both love to stretch themselves and then drag themselves around on the carpet. They pull their bodies around by using their front legs. It's so cute to watch. Are they scratching their bellies or stretching or are WE being trained to watch and drool at say "ohhh, you're so cute" ?

If they are draging their butts around on the carpet that is a sign of worms, if they are only scratching their bellies then they are probably just itching themselves and you might want to make sure they don't have fleas or some other paracite. If nothing is wrong with them then they probably just like the way it feels, but be carefull that they don't do it too much and harm their skin.

It's could be sore hips and the beginning on arthritis. My basset hound does the same thing especially in the mornings. It's quite funny looking but our vet x-rayed her and found some hip issues. We started giving her glucosamine chondroitin tablets in the morning which helped a lot.

ps - Someone mentioned anal glands but that would only be the case if they're dragging their asses not their legs.

Well they are well known for being attention seekers, fox terriors and jack russells do it to as do maltese, they do it to stretch for one, as their hind legs arent as strong as they look and if you have ever noticed your dogs shaking or shivering...its not because they are cold......its because they are trying to carry all the weight around (another reason not to overfeed them.), the other reason is because they like the feel of the carpet on their bellies.

Are you sure the back legs are okay?? I have a foster that does it because her legs don't work well with arthritis and hip displasia.

I have a younger border collie that leaves her back legs on the couch when she gets down but she is just stretching after her nap on the couch.

I know it's gross (sorry), but dogs have an anal gland that needs cleaning. There is a way for you or a dog groomer to clean the gland, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell you how. Ask your vet or your groomer.

My Mini Dach does the same thing. It's sooo funny to watch! I think they are just stretching and scratching their tummies. I wouldn't worry too much unless they do it nonstop.

It's perfectly normal, they are stretching and using muscles they don't normally use, around here we call it frog-dogging lol

All dogs do that, they are stretching. My mini dachshund does it and so does my big dog.

they are trying to express their anal glands.
you may have to ask the vet/ groomer to teach you how to express their anal glands.
