How does one man, control an empire of slaves? By convincing two men, to enslave two more men. The are called 'Tom' in America. Ask the sons of slaves in America, how the feel about 'Tom'. Hear the shame in their voice, as well as in the voices of the sons of so called masters, and then you tell me whether slavery is moral.
It is from scriptures like this, and observations of the world I live in, that lead me to love Souls, and to ask for forgiveness.

If you didn't take thta out of it's context you would see that the biblical notion of slaves is much more like an indentured servant than what we typically know today as slavery (which has been biased by US history). Slaves had to be treated well could only be kept for 7 years at most, were to be given compensation at the end of thier service, had the ability to marry, and could gain freedom in any number of ways. Slaves also were to be treated as well as or better than members of the slave owners own family. All this stuff is right out of the bible as well.

The Old Testiment was written for the people who lived in that time. Jesus said in the New Testiment that those laws don't matter anymore. The Old Testiment is a reminder to us of what has happened in the past. If you were to read a history book on slaves and there was a quote saying that it was ok to own slaves, would you be questioning it the way you question this, just because it's in the Bible? The Old Testiment is basically another history book. Except for things like "Psalm", "Proverbs" and "Song of Songs."

I look at the Bible and the mentioning of slaves very similar to bosses and their workers.
1 Cor. 7:20-24 (NKJV)
Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called. [21] Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it. [22] For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord's freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ's slave. [23] You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. [24] Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called.
________
Slavary was common...but slaves were to be treated with respect and dignity. Sometimes people would sell themselves as slaves for a certian time period because they were unable to pay a debt with money. At the end of that time period, they were relased.
So, is it moral and ethical to own slaves? Is it moral and ethical to have hired workers? I would say Yes. That is if you treated them in a moral and ethical way, as the Bible commands.
We are first to obey the laws of our country. If the law says no, then no. But, if the law says Yes, then we are free to as long as we are treat the workers in a honorable, respectable manner, paying them an honest wage.

But, you can't take it out of context to make a point. It was saying if a man became poor and had to sell his land he could temporarily. Then he could sell himself into slavery temporarily to pay off any debts. But, then came the day of Jubilee where he was made free again and would get back his land. So, no you can't just go to other nations and get you some slaves.

It is now unlawful in society and therefore now immoral.
In that day it was lawful in society, and yet set aside that they might not purchase a slave from among their own people, because the selling of the slave is a greater sin but the owning of one might in fact be an act of greater kindness than the alternatives of that day and age.
So it was tolerated, not condoned, and it was bad to do it, but great to redeem those subjected to it, in scripture.
Divorce was also tolerated, but it was greater to be reconciled.

To keep another in bonds of slavery is not moral. Human beings are not property. I believe that that notion was one of America's greatest mistakes. Human life is to be respected and to treat one as less than human is a direct reflection on the character of the person doing it.

Ugh, why do they Jesus changed everything. If he did, then why even put the Torah in their bible !
The reason that verse is not being used today, is because in the US, it is illegal to own slaves. Or they would be "using" it.
