Money. Historically, it's laughably off. It's actually amazing that the publisher allowed it. Normally, historical background in works of fiction are vetted by the publisher. Strangely, with this and several other modern books, this no longer happens. Must be a new form of alternate historical fiction, because he describes an alternate history that cannot be documented in the real world.
The big problem with Dan Brown's book is that he includes a 'disclaimer' that purports to say that the places and events depicted really have a basis in fact. Once he did that, he crossed the line of ordinary fiction, and caused the furor that has resulted.

Dan Brown wrote the book as a piece of fiction...he used a few facts as a basis then went off on speculation that would make for an exciting story. Many authors do this...Michael Chricton (sp?) for one, the author of Jurassic Park. Chricton researches his books very thoroughly. This gives a plausible basis for the fiction to follow and, when done well, makes for a more enjoyable story.

The Da Vinci code is a novel. It's a fictional story. Nobody is claiming otherwise.
The Bible is the best selling book ever written. Money or truth?

I think that people forget that the DaVinci Code is just a novel. Sure they use real places, and make references to art and organizations ( some real and some fictional). What really caused the furor are remarks regarding the Catholic Church, their secrecy and their faith.. After all is said and done, it was a thought provoking book, but written for the money.

i don't believe what he wrote is true.
Da Vince Code is a bit like those Cinderella stories that are purposely changed to make the fairytale more interesting and new, in which Cinderella is actually an alien who wanted to take over Prince Charming's kingdom or something...[just an example].

He probably did it for the fame and the entertainment of watching the superstitious going so crazy over a work of fiction.
