So why does everyone who reads the bible bang on about it being something more insidious and darker?

Surely they had to nick the apple before they ate it, do you think they were borrowing it and were going to glue it back onto the tree afterwards?

Is apple nicking especially bad considering Adam was living in the garden anyway? there were no farmers so no land ownership baack then: couldn't have been a sin..."though shalt not covet that apple over there"...never made it in to the ten commandments

So, now that we have cleared up that the bible is completely wrong on this critical part: will this make a difference to everyone's lives?

Brilliant!
I hadn't thought of that!
Although my own tale of petty theft was actually pinching apples off of a tree in a neighboring field. We walked along a country lane and took an apple clearly ignoring all the no trespassing signs. The land owner shot us with rock salt!
Maybe if God had done that, just shot them in the bottom with a pellet gun full of rock salt things would be different now!

Apples? Which Bible you readin' BOY? The only apples I can think of in the Bible is folks as is the APPLE OF GOD'S EYE.

You can be one of them apples too, if you admit that, tho' you've never done scrumpin', you may have participated in illicit humpin', or gossipin', or cheatin' on your taxes, or not doing good to someone you had the power to do good for, or SUMPIN'.

Nobody's perfect. That's the idea. We've ALL done wrong, and need a Saviour. Speaking of Jesus Christ AND scrumping, Jesus defended his disciples against criticism for gleaning from the local farmers' excess (OK by Jewish law) on the Sabbath Day (not OK by Jewish law). You and Jesus ALREADY agree about something!!! You should try to get to know this Guy better.

Look, it is a story. No one can prove it is true or false. However, you may have faith, your choice and belief, that it is true.

The important issue is the message, for it is true in general.

We are born innocent and naive. We have a proclivity to disobey and rebel. The rebellion and disobedience usually has negative consequences.

You are correct on the specific facts, but miss the point of the story. Substitute cars for apples, or countries or wives or lives for apples. The intrinsic message does not change.

I consider that this story has a detail element and a conceptual element, which must be understood to desribe the whole story.

first of all, do not be surprized if the theory of the big bang is abandoned in the 21st century as not being helpful in being predictive and out of sorts with the prevaililng data

as far as the fruit and original sin... ground zero of death in the world... no... the original sin went beyong the apple munching... it was the rebellion against God... the willful breaking of the clear rules of God for selfish reason and not returning the glory He desrves

never trust a snake... sinn'll kill ya despite what the snake on the street syas

The original sin was breaking into the cookie jar after God tells them not to. It wasn't the fact of eating a fruit, but going against the law. The law said "leave this one tree alone."

The sin was pride and trying to be better than God. God told them not to eat of one tree. All the rest of Eden was theirs to plunder but don't touch one tree. They convinced themselves that they would learn how to be God if they ate of it. How silly we mortals were and are. We still try to be God.
