The proper way to eat soup is to move the spoon over the top of the soup away from you. once there is soup on the spoon lightly touch the bottom of the spoon on the surface of the soup. This....for some reason....stops the drips. Lean forward and insert the spoon in your mouth. The soup spoon should be a rounded one and the soup bowl should be a shallow one not a deep bowl. When coming to the end of the soup tip the bowl slightly away from you.

You should spoon away from you, that is to say the spoon should start at the table edge side nearest your body and finish up at the far side. YOU should pull your chair in until your body just touches the table edge and position the plate so that the front edge is in line with the table edge. You may wear a napkin if the occasion commands it. and strictly speaking you should bring the spoon to your lips and your head should remain still and not lean over towards the spoon and plate. Do not overload the spoon. You must never tip the plate towards you....always away from you otherwise you may 'get a lapful'.
This is definitely the correct way to tackle soup and I agree it can be tricky......just be slow and methodical and consentrate on what you are doing. The soup spoon has the rounded shape, dont mistake it for the desert spoon.

Gentile Reader:
When attempting to eat soup, you should always scoop your soup away from you, scraping the bottom of the spoon along the rim of the soup bowl.
Never over fill your spoon as this only asks for a spill to occur. Only fill it half way until you're sure you won't spill or until the soup cools some, Soup tends to spill more easily when it's hot.
Cordially yours,
Miss Manners

Dip the spoon into the soup, moving it away from the body, until it is about two-thirds full, then sip the liquid, without slurping, from the side of the spoon, without inserting the whole bowl of the spoon into the mouth. The theory behind this is that a diner who scoops the spoon towards himself is more likely to slosh soup into his lap, although it is difficult to imagine what sort of eater would stroke the spoon so forcefully through the liquid that he creates waves, It is perfectly fine to tilt the bowl slightly-again away fron the body-to get the last spponful or two of soup.

Well, you can use a straw or be sure to use the proper soup spoon. Do not overfill the spoon and give it a sec before putting it in your mouth so that any drops that might fall on you will fall in the soup.

Hi Richard! Best way is to get a soup spoon and tilt it evr so slightly and slurp the soup out. Failing that just get a big desert spoon and shovel the lot into your mouth, it's not going to go anywhere else then!

Hah! i know the solution to your dilemma!
When you dip your spoon in, lift it out with your soup and dab the bottom back into the soup, the suction of the soup sucks the drip off the back of the spoon leaving you to safely lift it to your mouth!

Don't fill the spoon completely, just half fill less likely to spill over the sides when in motion.....and move your head towards the spoon

It all depends on your age.
If you are a small child, your soup eating skills will improve. One fine day you will realise that you can eat soup without spilling it.
Make the most of it though, while it lasts.
As you approach old age, say 50 ish (like me and my husband), you will notice that your capacity for eating food without 'chundering' down your front vanishes without trace! We had a whole picnic this summer where we laughed and laughed at ourselves. (The alternative would have been crying).
