The only bbq "sauce" I'm aware of that's like this is moppin'. I'm from VA, and this is the only way my family eats bbq. :)
Salt and pepper a boneless pork shoulder and roast it uncovered in the oven at 250 for about 6 - 8 hours. Take the juice from the bottom of the pan and mix with butter, vinegar, Tabasco sauce and a bit of salt and pepper (if desired). Cook this on the stove in a pan for a few minutes, until the butter is melted.
Heat a charcoal grill to medium heat with a few wood chips in the bottom (for good smoke flavor), and cook the roast on the grill, covered, basting every 10 - 15 minutes, until the outside is crispy and charcoaled and very juicy.
Pull the pork and dip in the moppin' (or put it on a bun and pour it over the meat and let it soak into the bun.)

in the south there are different kinds of BBQ sauces and people are very opionated about the kind they like. There is a vinegar based sauce that is sweet but tangy and spicy ( mosty from black pepper) and here's the recipe that i found closest to it.
1 cup cider vinegar
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon brown sugar
In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, salt, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes and brown sugar. Mix well and allow ingredients to mesh for about 4 to 8 hours before using.
this is what they call "north carolina bbq sauce" and you can either use it as a sauce or as a sauce to baste your meat while cooking it.

The very definition of BBQ sauce means it has, at hte very least, kechup (tomato), brown sugar, and vinegar. All the other stuff is what makes it taste a variety of different ways.
I foudn this one. I wouldn't call it bbq sauce, but ti can be used on the grill.....
Daddy’sTangy Griling Sauce

1 stick butter, melted
