No, it means that Americans are being taught less. Being dumb is not the same as not knowing.
But yes American schools are a joke: largely because we are a nation run by a group of people who believe every word of a book written almost 2000 years ago, instead of scientific facts, which can be pr oven at any lab in the world.

I do not think Americans are getting dumber. I think our education system has suffered just like the rest of our economic system because of the over spending on non tax payers and those that do not wish to become a true citizen of America. Teachers in Public schools are burdened with trying to teach non-English speaking students. This takes away from the instruction time that should be spent on those that do speak our National language. When you look at the state testing scores you can normally identify the areas where there is a higher population of non-English speaking students by how low the scoring is. And No we shouldn't provide the testing material in their native language. If they want to attend American schools and be Americans, then they need to speak the American language of English and quit dragging the quality of the American education system down to the lower levels that are in the country they left behind in their native country. My kids attend a non traditional Public school that focuses on CORE knowledge. The school has only been around a few years and already has higher test scores than all but one or two other schools in our city. I praise the Charter schools for what they believe in and teach our kids.

This has been called the dumbing down of America... It started with the Reagan Administration's program 'Reaganomics'; President Ronald Reagan signed into legislation huge cuts in our public education system. It continues with the Bush Administration's; No Child Left Behind. The government of the USA should always strive to increase spending in the public school system and not cut programs...
Here is an important point: A strong public education system is a clear path to democracy. To have an effective and successful democracy a country needs to educate the masses. Greater education means a much stronger democracy. The GOP has spent the past 30 years attempting to cut and cutting education programs in the USA. This is a clear sign that the GOP favors a more authoritarian system of government.

The education sys is not the problem. It's the combination of students and teachers. In other countries WHAT is taught and HOW it is applied which makes the difference. We graduate students who can identify, and measure, the area under a curve but can't balance a check book! Students know which mall to buy which jeans from but have no idea in which career field they are best suited.
So, I guess, in some respects, yes, we are getting dumber.

In many ways, yes. The annual budgets for education programs are getting smaller and smaller every year due to budget cuts with increases for military go up and up. Educator across the nation have to work two jobs just to make ends meet . What good is it when you can't read or write very well .
Schools are getting more and more crowded with still fewer teachers who attempt to do the job with limited resources at hand.

this coming from someone who isn't actually reading statitical information.
where i reside the scores and schools rank so high it's hard to find a place to live because it's the mecca of education.
do you trust the media all the time you try to read what is said in the news and online?
don't look like you're uneducated.
it's as bad as the person who wanted to fight about how blacks are over populating the united states when you really look around there's hardly any and it's the latino population that is higher, but no they were right because they read it online in a blog, instead of actually looking around personally to see what is the deal going on in the states this day and age.
so if you want to bash the usa, do it legitimately, like how we have suck *** presidents and politicians instead of trashing the tax payer.

Hunny, called...
Teach for the Test.
In that is what is happening now and then in schools today. We need to get back to the traditional lesson reviews.
Sad but true.
