I have a 7 month old Maltese and He is not a outside dog. We don't let him outside because our area is bad for fleas and we don't want him to have them. So we use puppy pads for him to pee. I can say he is trained with them he always goes on them at our house. He goes on the pad and squats and pees on it. Now the other day my mother wanted to watch him and she called me at work telling me that my dog had lifted his leg to pee on three of her chairs. She doesn't own other dogs. Wanted to know if there was a way to teach him not to lift his leg and always squat. I also heard if I would neuter him he wouldn't lift his leg to pee. any help???

Neutering will probably stop him from marking, but not lifting his leg. Leg-lifting to urinate for a male is a natural part of development. The only way that you could have prevented that would have been to neuter him before four months of age (and that may not have stopped it).

In addition to getting him neutered you can prevent marking by either supervising or confining the dog. Or, use a product called a Belly Band - it wraps around his midsection and either stops him from marking while it is on, or teaches him not to mark while wearing it because he will then be wet.

No idea about the lifting the leg to pee but I think that it is silly to make him an indoor only dog only because of flees. The flea meds they have today like Frontline and The Program will keep him 100% flea free no matter how bad the fleas are outside. You should look into those that way you can let him pee outside and lift his leg as is his natural instinct. Would you want to stay inside all the time?

Training a male dog (or any dog) to urinate inside is a big mistake and you will be sorry. Walk your dog on a leash, or treat your dog with a flea and tick control product, there are many, and they work well. Ask your vet or check out the local pet store. I use Top Spot, very expensive, but it is excellent and one application works for a month or more. Your solution is a very foolish one. Try http://www.1800petmeds.com/dog.asp

Hi,

I don't have male dogs anymore, but had a male German Shepherd a couple of years ago. I've never heard of any way to get them to stop lifting his leg to pee once they start it. It's kind of like instinct to them once they reach a certain age. Sorry to say, I think your pup is growing into his adulthood behavior.
Lots of Luck!

Well since he is not neutered that would be why he is lifting his leg. He is not older enough for breeding and nature is telling him to lift the only way to help stop him of this would be to get him fixed!

While unfortunate, leg lifting is natural and since he has learned it, you probably will never break the habit. One thing I've heard of are called belly bands. It wraps around his belly, preventing him from peeing when you don't want him to.

sorry, but i think you are out of luck if you want him to keep squating. when a male dog starts to mature,he starts lifting his leg. i have 2 male dogs (both neutered) and both still do it. i think it is just that male instinct thing.
