and why are they there? Doesn't the government of Nigeria trust its own people. I hear you have to pay whoever is manning the checkpoints a bribe to get through them

Yes there are check point through out the city and nation.
Well, the check points were actually put in place for security reasons… but unfortunately the whole point was completely lost with time. So you find some police men using the opportunity to cash in.

its because there are a lot armed robbers and the like but police checkpoints are actually outlawed but they are still there... the police expect u to bribe them but u can get passed them for the most part without doing that

Checkpoints is a valid exercise of police power of the state to prevent the occurrence of crimes.

Its called corruption sweetie it happens in so many developing countries people are so poor they gotta make money however they can and the elite want to stay the elite and you only do that by keeping those below you below you anyway you can and that usually involves specific measures like these to take away their money or education opportunitues etc.
