Hispanics increased their hold as the country's largest minority group, at 14.5 percent of the population, compared with 12.8 percent for blacks.

Hispanic is a term for people with ethnic backgrounds in Spanish- speaking countries. Hispanics can be of any race, and most in the U.S. are white. When demographers talk about the shrinking percentage of white people in America, generally they are talking about whites who are not Hispanic.

— Such whites are a minority in four states — Hawaii, New Mexico, California and Texas — and the District of Columbia. The share of white people fell below 60 percent in three other states — Maryland, Georgia and Nevada. Nationally, non-Hispanic whites make up about 67 percent of the population, down from 70 percent at the start of the decade.

California, New York, Texas and Florida have the nation's largest immigrant populations. The new data show that immigrants will travel beyond those states if there are jobs available.

South Carolina's immigrant population grew by 47 percent since 2000, more than any other state. Hispanics grew by 48 percent in Arkansas, the most of any state.

I live in SC and it is ridiculous how things have changed in the past few years. Most of the peorblem is minor incoveniences, but it has changed small parts of everyday life here. I have to wait extra long for everyhting that is automated, because I have to go through the spanish options every time. There is a couple of only spanish speaking radio stations. If they are legal, then more power to them, but most are here illegaly, and too many employers are taking advantage of that fact.

I'm not really going to get excited over the precise rate at which we whites become a minority. Look at the world. World wide we already are, and always have been. We have just had a disproportionate impact.

However, I think Americans have the right to determine the direction of this nation, not foreigners, and I think that our immigration laws should be designed to enhance the economy and life experience of those in this country.

That is not what is happening now.

I have no problem with any of it. This country was basically a dumping ground for the poor, unwanted, and unwelcomed from around the world and it led to the US becoming what I consider a great nation. As far as immigrants, If they are legal, kudos to them. If they are illegal, get them legalized and start collecting taxes from them just like the rest of us. If they don't speak english, start teaching them. We need common bonds to unify us as a nation, and it will never be race, religion, or politics...so language should be the single unifying bond for US citizens.

Actually, Hispanics in the US are counted as white when the DOJ configures statistics about perpetrators of criminal offenses, and the *same people* are counted as non-white when the DOJ counts victims. The government wants to kill you, Whitey. There's no other explanation. Don't trust them.

With all these Mexicans coming in I knew it would be a matter of time before white people became the minority.

Let's just annex South America and get the whole thing over with. Just think of all of the beachfront property we would gain!

OK. So the racial demographic of the country is changing as different people move in.

Why should we feel any particular way. Aren't we trying to reach a social consciousness where race doesn't matter?
