Just be there to say 'I love you' on her birthday. I am sure it will be the best gift for her.

Fine restaurant that she has never been. Tablecloths, silverware, etc. No chains or franchises. Get dressed and buy her a corsage. Ask the server to take a picture at the table. Have it framed within the week as a momento. Don't do that stupid family tree suggestion. Too many of her family have passed on already she doesn't need to be reminded of that. Do it now too. My mother died at 78.

Well, it all depends on how much you could afford. I also don't know how much time you have left before her birthday. I'll still suggest a portrait painting of her, & make it a surprise.
At that age they also need a lot of love & attention. Plan her BD to include the types of comics or movies she like & spend the whole day with her.
If you have enough fund, you could also give your both parents a surprise trip to your mum's favorite place.

Try making (or getting a copy of) your family tree and frame it nicely. You could also make a wall-hanging quilt with pictures from the family on it (ot it doesn't have to be a wall hanging).
No matter what she'll love the fact that shes getting a gift I'm sure.
Good luck!

I've learned that if you can't give someone knick knacks and things that you can never go wrong with getting someone a gift certificate to a restaurant.

Dress up really nice, bring your kids if any, and go to for a fancy meal out. Make sure the neighbours see you arrive, bring flowers, and maybe a gift basket of things she wouldn't usually buy for herself, fancy tea, wine that sort of thing.
Take lots of photos, make a speech about how much you all love her and then watch her dissolve.

Flowers or maybe a book on travel and interesting places to visit. It could take some time to pick out a good book, though.

Get her something that you made. haha i know that sounds funny, but she will love it. Something she will always remember. Parents love it when their "kids" even if your not a child anymore make them things. Like a card that tells her how much you love her and what a joy she has been in your life. Or make her a CD of all the songs that remind you of her. Or my grandma loved it when i made her a photo album of the family, and all their times together.
Best of Luck.
