I live in a canyon with rock walls and obviously can't shoot at them. I'm firing a Remington 700 Mountain Rifle,270 Winchester and a S&W 9MM. I need great stopping power. Anyone have some good ideas on what will do the job?

I had the same problem, I lived up in the mountains, down in a valley next to a river with high rock bluffs all around...What I did was, buy hay bales, 2 stacks 3x3 you're all set, go with 3 stacks if it makes you feel better...What you're shooting will not penetrate even one bale of hay, but give it a try, just to give yourself peace of mind

Put big rectangular sections of soild wood leaving a few feet distance away from the bottom of the hills, get dirt, clay-dirt and burry it enough to expose some of the wood in front. The wood is 2 or 3 high, 2,3 wide, is up to you. Under everything some flat rocks behind and at the base of the wood would help. From behind you can secur the blocks with brackets or a long.
Ideally you want the dirt to cover the wood and almost parallel to the ground to the hill behind, or close to it.

I thought I had the answer until I read your fine print. Most outdoor ranges are banked by earth or three sides, that won't erode or allow for "shrapnel" when struck. You should contact the NRA or look at some outdoor ranges in/near your area. Sorry, it's the best answer I can come up with right now.

if you can rent/borrow a tractor with a 2 bottom plow or a boxblade you can work up the ground a little bit and make it loose. if it has a front end loader, you can make a fairly large and tall berm in a short amount of time. you can also do the same with a boxblade but it will take longer. you can also hire someone to do it with a dozer, but that will cost alot of money.

dirt id by far the best thing for you to use besides mabey a huge wall of ballistic jelly or bodies. not to mention the cheapest and easiest to get... now how youll get it into your canyon i dont know but youll have to have at least a head high berm of it about 10ft think at the thickest.

You build up a big dirt pile and put the pine board infront of it. Dirt stops the bullets easily, and won't deflect them.
