I believe it's called "metabolizing". Thanks!

The amount of time depends on the specific macro nutrient.Simple sugars are assimilated almost immediately where as fats can take a few hours to digest.Metabolizing calories is not the absorption but is the use of the calories for energy.
Digestion is the absorption and is dependent on many factors including the length of a specific macro nutrient to the amount of enzymes in your stomach at the time.Acids digest fats and proteins and alkalines digest carbohydrates.
Thanks for giving me another chance to make Piedpiper look like an idiot.Guess that's what he gets for answering one of my questions saying I'm an idiot.Proof's in the pudding right here.I do like his spelling however.

It depends on the nutrients. Sugar is a nutrient, technically speaking, in that your body can use it and take it in fast. Sugar metabolizes fast, something like oatmeal does not. Your body will usually prefer the steady pace of a slowly metabolizing food because it doesn't spike your blood sugar all over the place. Wheat bread metabolizes slower than white bread because it's less processed and has more fiber.

I have to go with PiedPiper on this one. By the time your body eliminates the waste (12-24 hours) the nutrients have been absorbed into your bloodstream.

Someone told me once that it takes twelve hours for the body to go threough the complete digestion process. So I would say twelve hours.
