The eastern half of South America was ceded to the Portugese by the Pope when Spain and Portugal were arguing over the new world and who would own what. It's actually surprising that ONLY Brazil still speaks Portugese.

Despite the fact that the rest of South America speaks a form of Spanish, the people of Brazil speak Portuguese.

Portuguese is spoken by 100% of the population. Other languages are restricted to small groups and, unfortunately, English is not widely spoken, even as a second language.
