My sister tried this; She began by asking what he knew about the birds and the bees and let him ask questions first. He took it well. He is now a grown adult, and did this same thing with his son. But who really has the instruction book?

Be open and honest. Stop saying birds and bees at 12 I'm pretty sure he knows the word sex. Just answer the questions he asks do not overload him with too much information. If he says he has no questions then you question him as to what he knows chances are what he knows he learned from kids his age. Don't get angry at some of the things he may say, If it's wrong simply correct him. keep the lines of communication open. Do not be embarrassed or he will think sex is something shameful.

He's 12 and hasn't figured it out yet? He's old enough to understand it clinically. Just pretend you're a doctor and explain everything. It might help to print out charts and diagrams, too.

If you don't have all the answers, ask google. Wikipedia has a lot of info too. Honestly, he should have gotten a sex education from school by now.

How do you explain that to any child? There are some wonderful books out there for you. And to be honest, at the age of 12, he probably already knows most of it. You would be surprised at what the learn in schools from other people and books.

Just keep it simple. At 12, he is getting a little closer to needing real information. You can explain about a man and a woman getting together to make babies without getting to graphic, but at the same time leaving some warnings about unprotected sex.
