My 14 month old son is currently suffering from a pretty bad summer cold. Since he is having trouble breathing through his nose, it is causing him to wake up in the middle of the night. We just got him into sleeping through the night a month ago (he was a nursed baby so it was hard for us to get him out of the nighttime feeding routine). I don't want to fall back into the old routine by going into his room when he wakes up. Not to mention two nights ago when he woke up he wanted to play, when we thought it was because of his cold. Anyway, should I fear the return of the old routine by giving him attention in the night? Or should I continue giving him the extra care he is getting from being sick?? Any opinions would be appreciated...thanks.

If it's the cold that's waking him up in the middle of the night, then it's not his fault. He can't help it. The old routine most likely won't return because this isn't something that he's doing himself--its' just the cold that's waking him up. Once the cold is gone he should still be sleeping through the night. If the old routine does return though, it won't be as hard to get him back on schedule this time because he hasn't been waking up in the middle of the night for very long. Good luck and I hope he feels better :)

My son is 15 months, and when he was about 10 months old I had him on a routine. He went to bed at 8:30, slept through the night, and was up around 7:30 or so. I am not sure how well your little one will adjust, seeing as how you've only been on your routine for a short while. I was rocking my son to sleep before bed, and doing that up until about the end of May. Then I decided it was time for him to fall asleep on his own. I lay him in the crib and he will lay quietly (most times) until he falls asleep. I had to break that routine just shortly after we started it because he was sick, and I started rocking him to sleep again. But, once he was all better we went back to the old routine again. It was hard in the beginning (lots of crying), but he is now back into the same routine.

My advice: as long as the baby isn't in physical pain, do your best to avoid giving him the attention at night. I know colds cause discomfort. Try running a humidifier in his room and prop his head up while he sleeps. This will help reduce the symptoms that cause him to wake up (inability to breathe through nose, for example). Good luck to you, and I hope this helps!!

No it shouldn't totally mess up the routine if it's the cold waking him up. When you hear him awake in the night , listen to see if he really needs your attention before you go to him. If he doesn't need you DON"T go to him. If he does need you due to coughing or breathing problems or just needing changed, then QUIETLY,and with dimmed lights (so he does not think it is playtime), do what you need to do , tell him good night and leave him alone. this will let him know that night is not attention time . Even if he starts to fuss...If you know there is nothing wrong , then let him fuss. Babies will learn that they can soothe themselves and that crying is not the ticket to having mommy come in for a midnight play session.
Hope this helps.

Try giving him age-appropriate cold medicine, to stop the congestion. Don't go to him unless he's crying, then just blow his nose or whatever he needs, and leave. Let him go back to sleep on his own.

You had a disaster and grandma helped out and took care of your toddler. the 1st element you need to do is say thank you and be grateful your toddler became left with somebody who loves him. the least confusing thank you to maintain him wide awake and not taking cat naps is to maintain him engaged in the process the morning. He can no longer sleep if he's busy twiddling with you. As for figuring out to purchase him to sleep in his crib at night, be chronic and shop forcing the subject. do no longer provide in.
