Claim all your eligible children on your Tax Return - now on your W-4's that's different. Go to www.irs.gov - they have a handy dandy tax calculator on there.

We have two eligible children - we don't claim either of them on our W-4's and pick them up on our Tax returns - seems to help.

I like getting a big return. So, when I fill out my tax paperwork for my job, I put down that I'm going to claim 0 on my taxes. This way, my work takes out the maximum taxes (as if I had no children). Then, when you fill out your state and federal taxes, I claim 1 (I only have one child). I end up getting most of my taxes back.

If you plan on claiming 2 on your taxes, and you put 2 on the paperwork for your job, your work will take out the appropriate tax. Meaning, you will have less taxes taken out throughout the year, and you will get a small return.

Just remember, the number you put on the paperwork for your job doesn't have to be the same as the number you claim on your actual taxes.

1040 line 6a: Yourself.
1040 line 6c: Each child.

Check rules in the 1040 for whether or not you can claim the children. If they live with you most of the time, you can safely put them all there. If they live with someone else 50% or more of the time, you'll have to read the 1040 instructions to see if you can still claim them. There are guidelines.
