The Presbyterians are definitely not stupid by any means. They probably require more education than any other denomination. Bible interpretation is a major part of their study.
Now, This area is one of the few doctrines I disagree with somewhat. They use Romans 8:29-30. and Ephesians 1:5,11.
If predestination, as they see it, is correct-then it would negate the great commission in Matthew. Many, many Baptist are split on this issue. It is a very tough argument.
Edit: Verry good Tommy M-you said it about as easy as it can be said.

Presbyterians, as well as other Protestants, follow more what Paul supposedly wrote in the Bible. Paul tends to be more gnostic which is where you get your predestination beliefs.
Of course, they work against themselves, too. If things are predestined, that takes away any choices we really have. Therefore, they have no need for proselytizing. Whether someone goes to Hell or not would already be chosen, no matter who was able to convince who of what.

I belong to the Orthodox Presbyterian church and I believe that I can answer your question which a really good one by the way...If you look throughout the Bible God chose those whom He loved...For example God chose Isreal to be the church why is that? Why didnt God choose Rome or China or Japan...God is in control He is the one who chooses to be His people...In the New Testament God calls us his adopted children...well last I knew when you adopt a child they dont chose their parents....the parent chooses the child..Jesus chose his disciplines as well...God has a plan of action and He chose his church but it is up to us to follow that is where we choose...God will send someone in our life to soften our hearts to His Word. If you remember the story of Moses and the Pharoh...remember what the Bible said , "Pharoh's heart was hardend" who hardend his heart? God did and why would God harden someones heart if we have free will? God did it so He may be Glorified. Here are some scripture versus for you to read..
Acts 4:28
Romans 8:29-30
Ephesians 1:5 and 11
God's Word says that his people are predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things accoridng to the counsel of his will.....how much more clear can you get...God also said Jacob I loved Esau I have hated...if God gave us free will then why would He say that he hated a child before it was even born? God is a just God we all deserve Hell everyone does even Christians. We all have fallen short of the Glory of God...it is God who bestows mercy and allows us to get into Heaven. We cannot get into Heaven unless through Jesus who goes to the father for us. It isnt done by what we do or how good of a person we are...we are allowed into Heaven by the grace and mercy of God..
I know it was a long answer but I hope that this helped and if you need anything else any more questions about what I believe here's my im number sherip2005 its on yahoo...God Bless

How can this be proper?
Why are there so many bloody rules?
Why does all this dogma just make me wanna throw up?
144 thousand?Please!Predestination?Preposterous!
In some instances ,it seems that salvation matters most
to the people who are selling it.They throw pretty good weddings and funerals,Not too stuffy for a Church and they even
have a nip now and then but you know;to me,a religion
has more to do with celebrating life, living it well and with FAITH rather than an unhealthy preoccupation
with whether or not one has the"Golden ticket" to
gain entrance into Heaven.Being fixated on the afterlife
is NOT the point of the message of Christianity.
At least I hope not. That would again, make me yak.
Are not Heaven, & Disneyland® two seperate nirvani?

Revelations, which is misunderstood and misinterpreted by so many, specifies that some will be caught up in the rapture and some will go to heaven.
Jesus also said "Not everyone who calls on My name will be saved in the last days."
What presbyterians don't do is explain the entire scripture in context.
Jesus said, clearly and several times, those who believe in Him and do the will of the Father will go to heaven. That's all there is to it. We just have to choose.

Let's go to Roman's Chapter 8:28-29
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
The question is if you are not foreknown, predestined, called, can you still be justified and glorified? Many passages indicate not all are called. This is the point where the Reformed Church divides from many others.

We are all created and therefore chosen for life eternal with God but we chose to accept it or not and it is not for prebysterians alone but for all Christians. When someone puts out a gift for "everyone," only those who want to will go for it.

God doesn't choose who goes into heaven. People who believe in God decide that they believe in Him and that makes them go into heaven. God would not reject someone if He doesn't want them to be in heaven, he'll love that another person's in heaven with him.
