My wife had my wrists cuffed together behind my back for 24 hours, 10 minutes. Of course, it was my suggestion. ;-)
Just to address your question directly, if you go for something like this, don't be out of earshot for more than mere moments. Be sure to also have a quick-release mechanism available, such as safety scissors in the case of rope or scarves, and the keys for any locks and chains. (Bolt cutters might be a good idea also.) You never know when an emergency might arise, either with him or from outside.
