I think it's important for anyone who is living in another country to learn the basics of that language. If you are just traveling, then it's a different story.
Im in Korea now, but I could speak Korean before I came here. However when I go to China or Taiwan, and don't always have my friends to hold my hand, it involves a lot of pictures.
The paper and pen come in handy!
Im not really sure if speaking english will be all that helpful. If they can speak a little english, and they realise you can't speak Korean, then they will try their best. But not everyone can.
It's very helpful to carry business cards with you, with addresses for if you are in taxi's etc. Then you can just give the driver the card, and enjoy the ride. Or if you are walking, show people the card, and they can help you find your way.
Depending on where you are in Korea, determines how much English they will know. I spent the weekend in the country, I don't think I saw anything in English... The bus didnt even say where it was going in Korean. Everyone else just seemed to know.
When hitchiking, we showed a brochure of the place we wanted to go.
It's easier if you know your way around an area, but if you are there for the first time, you can stumble across many difficulties.

You try and they try, and you use alot of mime and look a little stupid and eventually you get the message across. Either that or you break down and learn some basic Korean and be done with the whole exercise altogether.

it depends,if you go to a touristy area then you can use very simple english and you should manage but other then that, it's going to be really hard to communicate. only thing they will understand is, "ok" alot of younger people know how to speak basic enlish because they are taught english in school.

Lots of ways, happened to me often enough. First of all, brandnames stay the same, so that often helps. Point at things, to see what they want, or to explain what you want. Take your time, have fun. Make sketches, write down chemical formulas, I've done it all.
If you really want to understand eachother you will!
