I read a study that was performed that said the Xylitol (sp?) in the sugarless gums actually benefits your teeth by making it more difficult for plaque to build up, so chew away!

Chewing sugarless gum is actually beneficial to oral health. It stimulates the production of saliva which helps neutralize the pH of your mouth (reduces acidity). Higher levels of acidity often caused by bacteria and what we eat or drink is rough on enamel and can lead to cavities. It can also occasionally dislodge some food particles caught between teeth (although brushing & flossing is MUCH better). The only negative I can think of is TMD (trouble with pain, clicking, or popping of your jaw joint). If you have that, gum chewing is not recommended. Some chewing gum can also stick to certain dental work - that's also not so much fun.

I liked pickledmd's answer and thought DrDOA's was interesting, plus he's still in school so he Has to read a bunch of stuff. My opinion regarding gum is this: instead of chewing a lot, just chew one stick at a time.

Bad for your TMJ, in the long run. I have read articles studying the long term effects and it can lead to TemporoMandibular Disorder, which is characterized by noises or popping the TMJ, muscular pain when you open, limitation on how far you can open your jaw. Humans aren't meant to chew (or open and close their jaw) for a long time. So no, don't chew away.
