Learning any language other than your own is a plus. First, by learning the grammar rules of another language you become better at your own. Second like any school activity you are thinking and using your brain in different ways and thereby strengthening your own thinking skills. Also many colleges prefer to admit students who have foreign language study backgrounds.
That said, French is falling out of fashion in schools, being replaced or added to by the offering of Asian (Chinese) and Arabic languages because these are more valuable as tools in business and government jobs. All Americans should learn another language; we are way behind other countries in being bi-lingual (knowing more than one language).

You shouldn't, it's useless unless you plan on going to canada or france, now spanish is of a lot more use, because this country is heavily populated with hispanics, many of which don't speak english very well. plus spanish is just easier then french because you pronounce most of the letters in spanish. With french, you can have a ten letter word of which 5 you pronounce, it's ridiculous.
