No. The item you want from a store has a monetary value. The money approved by the government of the country is the agreed exchange.
You would be stealing even if you left something you though was an equal exchange. Besides that, what ever you leave probably is not something the store owner wants.

If you get caught, you'll go to jail. The barter system was successful because both parties agreed on what was to be traded. If you are just taking and item and leaving what you think is of equal value, that's not a fair trade. Stop stealing.

No...that would still be stealing. Unless agreed upon by both parties. If it's from a store especially, because the will most likely NOT be able to sell what ever you have left, because for one, I doubt it would be brand new, it wouldn't be on their inventory, and would mess that up. It wouldn't be in the computer system, and would they know which item you stole to set the price to equal it, just in case they could actually sell it? And finally, would anyone else want to buy it?
No...you would be stealing....plain and simple.

No -
1) first off it's stealing which ever way you look at it (you took it without permission)
2) The value of the item left is valued by you not by the person receiving it. It may be of no use to them therefore it has no value to them.

It's okay ... if the shop owner agrees to it. That's called bartering. However, if you just pocket a Store Item and leave a Personal Item in its place, well: maybe the shop owner doesn't want it. Maybe it has no value to the shop owner. In which case, it wasn't a fair trade because the shop owner didn't agree to it. All you did was shoplift, and then leave your unwanted garbage behind.
