I did a painting for Grade 12 art a year or two ago, and it is of about six or so brightly coloured people. I used acrylic paint (chromatid barnd) and impasto gel medium. I gave it to a chruch who hung it on their wall, and when I visited recently I noticed that one of my friends I painted blue has 'vanished' from the painting. The paint is still there, but it is clear. It is like the blue pigment has literally been sucked out of the painting. (Eerily enough she is the only one of them not a Christian anymore...) I want to paint it back -it was a fantastic painting - but what can I do to ensure it doesn not happen again?

I'll add to what's already been said that some acrylic paints are much better quality that others. The best ones, like Golden or Graham, even give you the 'lightfastness' ratings of their paints right on the jar or tube's label.

U.V. light deteriorates pigment that is used in paints, If you don't want for it to happen again than don't hang your paintings in direct sunlight, use varnish , and you can buy polarized u.v. blocking glass to cover your paintings from the sun. I hope it helps .
good luck

Light can fade paintings. this is why no one is allowed to take pictures in the Louvre, where many famous paintings are kept. Sunlight and even flashbulbs they say, can deteriorate the finishes.
